I like to think about websites like I think about houses. I like making my house functional or beautiful for me and my partner, and for whoever happens to visit. But if no one comes, that’s not the point.
I remember growing up when the internet was mostly websites, and now it’s mostly platforms. Platforms are great – they can connect you with millions of people. But I missed how different that is from when the internet was mostly millions of individual websites. Being on a platform is like living in a skyscraper and you never know who you might meet in the elevator and how many people might come to your apartment for Taco Tuesdays. Maybe two? Maybe two thousand? Maybe two hundred thousand?
And then having your own website is like owning your own house. If you want a pink fluorescent door with a doorbell that demands guests solve a musical riddle, you can have that tomorrow. And your house starts on a pretty remote island which probably no one will ever find unless you want them to. And the house you would design if you had your own remote island would be pretty cool, and exactly how you wanted it.
